In a bold move, the Chinese government is openly encouraging its citizens to prioritize childbirth over careers. With declining birth rates causing concern, China is now offering a range of incentives to promote marriage and childbearing. In several regions, marriage leave has been increased from 3 to up to 30 days. For instance, Sichuan province—China’s most populous—has extended marriage leave from 3 to 20 days. If citizens undergo medical check-ups before marriage, they can receive 5 additional paid leave days, totaling 25. Similarly, Shandong province has increased leave to 18 days, while provinces like Shaanxi and Gansu have pushed it up to 30 days. Currently, the standard central-level marriage leave in China remains at just 3 days, a rule in place since 1980.
